To our patients:
The COVID-19 pandemic is a very serious threat to the health of each and every one of us. We sincerely hope you are doing well and continue to do so.
For the very latest information we encourage you to follow reputable websites such as coronavirus.gov, rheumatology.org, or arthritis.org. Also EULAR, the European Rheumatology Association has an excellent information page under “EULAR guidance for patients COVID-19 outbreak”.
Please follow general recommendations including: good handwashing, avoid touching your face, cough or sneeze into an elbow or disposable tissue, practice social distancing, avoid shaking hands, avoid large groups of people, avoid public transportation as much as possible, and avoid unnecessary travel.
Our office is open for regular hours at this time. If you have an appointment scheduled we will contact you the day before the appointment to make certain you are not ill. If you are ill with fever or cough, we will ask you to reschedule the appointment. We are currently working to arrange a telehealth system that will allow you to do office visits via a smartphone or computer. This should be available in the next few days and if you would like to take advantage of this please call the office.
We recommend that you continue your medications even though we realize that many of the drugs we prescribe suppress your immune system. This is in keeping with recommendations from national and international rheumatology organizations. However, we do recommend that if you become ill that you hold your biologic or non biologic medication as you normally would for any active infection. One exception however is prednisone or other steroid medications you might be taking. You should not abruptly stop taking steroid medications. Stopping steroids abruptly can result in withdrawal with nausea, weakness, and other symptoms.
If you have any questions please call or text us. Please be aware however that due to heavy call volumes we might not get back to you as rapidly as we normally would.
Michael S Thakor MD and the entire staff of the Arthritis and Rheumatology Clinic of Northern Colorado.
